Taking Good Care of Your Dentures Means They Will Take Good Care of You

Dentures are just one tooth restoration we offer our patients at Windward Dental Care in Alpharetta, Georgia, who have issues with their smiles. With the help of dentures, your smile can once again function normally, allowing you to eat, drink, chew, smile and speak normally.

To make sure that your dentures serve you well, you will want to take good care of them, as they take good care of your smile. This begins with rinsing your dentures after every meal or snack. This simple action will help you limit the buildup of plaque and food particles which can get stuck in your dentures. Whenever you remove your dentures, take care not to drop them, as you don’t want to risk breakage.

To maintain your dentures, clean your teeth and gums as well as your dentures every day. For any teeth you still have in your smile, continue to brush them twice a day, floss at least once a day, and use mouthwash as needed. If you no longer have remaining teeth, you can simply clean the soft tissues in your mouth, such as gums, cheeks, palate, and tongue with a washcloth or soft-bristled toothbrush.

You can also best clean your dentures by using a soft-bristled toothbrush along with either a denture cleaner or nonabrasive toothpaste. Again, the goal is to safely remove plaque and food particles to keep your appliance in tip-top condition.

Finally, you will want to soak your dentures in a cup of water or even a mild denture cleaning solution while you sleep. Keeping your dentures moist at all times will ensure their continued fit and proper function.
